Best Character On Super Smash Bros Brawl – When Masahiro Sakurai first created Super Smash Bros. in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, the game was not made with the intention of being played professionally. The game was supposed to be a casual multiplayer party game; however, it has turned into one of the biggest eSports in the world.
With that in mind, the playstyle of many characters in the games over the years have been perfected by the pros and are even used in ways that the developers did not intend. This creates a few characters that stand out amongst the others in how overpowered they are in competitive play. 1. Meta Knight – Brawl
Meta Knight easily takes the top spot on this list. The discrepancy between this character and the rest of the roster in Brawl was so significant that there were legitimate talks of banning him in tournaments. He had an excellent recovery, fast combos, and moves that could kill at decent percentages. Meta Knight was a matchup problem for any character in Brawl, and hopefully Nintendo will never develop a character this broken ever again.

2. Bayonetta – Smash 4
Smash 4 was Bayonetta’s first appearance in the Smash franchise, and it certainly was one to remember. She comes in at the #2 spot on this list for her ridiculous neutral game, combos, and ability to perform disgusting zero-to-deaths. The character had to be nerfed by Nintendo two separate times. However, these nerfs were not enough to stop the best Bayonetta players from exploiting her in the game, and she still is the best character in the game.

3. Fox – Melee
Fox (along with his very similar counterpart Falco) is the top choice for a broken character from Melee. The character has amassed almost a cult-like following as a result of so many people using Fox in the game. He has some of the quickest attacks in the game, can rack up easy damage with his blaster and can deal out some nasty combos using his shine (down special) attack. When perfected, the Melee iteration of Fox is almost unbeatable.

4. Cloud – Smash 4
Although Cloud was also a top tier player in singles play in Smash 4, he was nearly unbeatable in doubles play. He was a perfect doubles character, as his attacks had huge hitboxes, along with having some of the most powerful attacks in the game. Doubles players perfected using his limit meter in performing ridiculous combos that could kill at a very low percent. Thankfully for fans of the series, Cloud was heavily nerfed in Smash Ultimate, so using him in doubles would not be unfair.

5. Pikachu – Smash 64
Ice Climbers from Brawl won’t make the top spot for this list, but they certainly could take the cake in terms of the most annoying move of all time. Popo and Nana were infamous for their chain grab combo, which results in a slow, annoying death if performed correctly. Once an opponent is grabbed, the player must quickly perform a down throw and then immediately grab again. Since there are two ice climbers, only one of them needs to be close enough to initiate a grab. The player could then rack up enough damage that eventually an up throw would kill. It wasn’t an exciting play style for fans to watch, but it certainly was effective.

7. Kirby – Smash 64
Masahiro Sakurai was also the Kirby franchise’s creator, so it comes as no surprise that he was so overpowered in the first installment in the Smash franchise. Kirby had the best recovery in the game, which allowed him to perform attacks off stage that many other characters in the game could not do. Kirby also had a solid down air and some uneven hitboxes that could be used very quickly to a player’s advantage. He wasn’t the most overpowered character in 64, but Kirby still makes this top ten list.

8. Peach – Ultimate
Peach is the only character I put on this list from Ultimate, and I think it is deservedly so. Professional players have been able to perfect her movement, as her ability to levitate can be exploited by the best. She also has a variety of projectiles, solid aerials, and a great counter. Peach can also pull off some insane combos due to her combination of aerials and the ability to float. When it comes to a professional standpoint, Peach takes the cake as the best character in the game.

9. Diddy Kong – Smash 4
Although he was eventually nerfed, early versions of Diddy Kong in Smash 4 were very tough to beat. Diddy Kong had early percent kill confirms despite being a small character, making him hard to match up against. He has some very effective grab combos, a solid neutral special projectile, and an annoying monkey hump (side special) move. Diddy was a nightmare to play against early on until Nintendo decided to nerf him after the first patch to the game.

10. Marth – Melee
Marth wasn’t exactly a broken character, but rather just an excellent one. He was fast, had strong hit power, edge-guard ability, and had many favorable matchups within the game. Marth (and Roy’s) popularity in Melee resulted in Fire Emblem games releasing in the U.S.
